Being in charge at General Motors Canada is no small task. However, as president and managing director, Kevin Williams is up for the challenge. And he has an impressive resumé to back him up—having held several high level positions in the US, Mexico and Europe.

The youngest of 12 children, the power player came from humble beginnings. “I came from a very poor family,” says Williams. “But I always had this dream that someday I would be sitting behind a desk as a businessman.”

Growing up in Lexington Park, MD, role models were few and expectations were low. “Nobody around me back then was encouraging me beyond just going to work for the military,” says Williams, “because in my hometown that is what everybody did.” Instead, working up to 12 hours a day, Williams paid his own way through school at the historically Black Tennessee State University to obtain his bachelor’s degree in business management in 1983.

He was the first in his family to graduate from university. And that afforded him a variety of career options. “Coming out of Tennessee State, I was fortunate enough to have eight job offers,” he remembers. “I picked GM because cars were something that I loved.” That was 28 years ago.

But the road to success was sometimes bumpy. It even included a recommendation by Williams’ first GM supervisor that he be let go before his probationary period was even over. “He said that I didn’t have the intelligence or the intellect or the capability to be a GM employee,” he says.

However, he wasn’t let go and went on to work his way up in the company, taking on the role of president of General Motors Canada in 2010 during extremely tough economic times. Newly rescued by the Canadian government, many believed the automaker should not have been given preferential treatment. Williams disagrees.

“Most people did not understand the significance of a company like General Motors,” he says. “And if it had gone under, its impact to its supply base and to communities all over Canada would have been immediate and devastating.” GM Canada has since paid back its loan in full. Williams claims the automaker is a stronger and sustainable company more than ever before. “We are not declaring victory,” he says. “But we have restructured the company from top to bottom. Virtually every aspect of the company was torn apart and put back together.”

A baseball bat in his office serves as a reminder for Williams: “The bat is a reminder that we are not here to only hit singles. We are here to hit homeruns with everything we do,” he says. “We are at a point of renaissance on the product front. Our goal is to move from being known as a great truck company to a company with a wide portfolio. Our new products demonstrate that we are not only in the game to compete, but we are in the game to win.”

Williams not only has big plans for his organization, he also holds himself accountable to the Black community. “I see myself as having the responsibility of being a positive role model to people of African descent,” he says. “It is important to reach back and give back. And if I, of all people, coming from my dire circumstances can be here today, anyone can.”

Sometimes we have to take a moment and acknowledge those who came before us. One such man is David E. Davis Jr. He was a Godfather of automotive journalism.  Davis died Sunday due to complications from surgery due to bladder cancer.

Courtesy of Road and Travel

As an Editor at Car and Driver he changed the tone of the writing. He pushed aside the cold analytical feel of statistics and encouraged writers to embrace an irreverent spirit and tap into the feeling of the driving experience.

Davis was the founder of Automobile magazine, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

A Retrospective-David E Davis Jr

Back in 1955, at the age of 24, while driving in an amateur car race, he flipped his MG. The accident nearly cost him his life and left Davis requiring several facial surgeries.  According to the New York Times David E. turned this accident into a positive.  “I suddenly understood with great clarity that nothing in life — except death itself — was ever going to kill me,” he said in a commencement address at the University of Michigan in 2004. “No meeting could ever go that badly. No client would ever be that angry. No business error would ever bring me as close to the brink as I had already been.”

The sleek DBS

It is a week to Christmas so this time I am presenting two lovely porn stars. They are Aston Martin siblings; the DBS and the V8 Vantage.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Convertible

What I love about these stars is that they are a beautiful mix of stunning good looks and power. Yes, while you can enjoy gazing at them, you can also thoroughly enjoy a good ride. These babies make you feel good. Remember what your Mom taught you… beauty is more than skin (or aluminum, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber composite) deep.

The DBS

This two-seater Aston Martin is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine, which kicks out
510 horses at 6500 rpm and 420 lb.ft of torque at 5750 rpm. This luxury sports car gets from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 4.3 seconds and can hit a maximum speed of 307km/h (191mph). It comes with a choice of a rear mid-mounted six-speed manual gearbox or a rear mid-mounted ‘Touchtronic 2′ six-speed gearbox with electronic shift-by-wire control system.

The DBS rolls on 20 inch wheels and has ventilated carbon ceramic discs to bring it to a stop.

The V8 Vantage

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage comes both as a coupe and a roadster. This two-seater is powered by a 4.7 liter V8 which cranks out 420 horses and 346 lb.ft of torque. It races from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). It comes with a rear mid-mounted six speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering. The V8 Vantage rests on 19 inch wheels and has ventilated and grooved steel disc brakes.

We are changing things up slightly this Friday. Normally this is where I would have inserted a porn car video that I created but it is the week before a Christmas, so I shall let Mr. Rick Ross create the video this time.

Now while I am not a huge fan of Rick Ross the Aston Martin eye candy in this video is stellar, both of our stars are featured.  Plus Drizzy and Chrisette Michele can do no wrong in my eyes, so enjoy.

Ferrari being seized

Ferrari being seized

In North Vancouver, British Columbia, police seized a $235,000 Ferrari Scuderia and a $75,000 BMW M6  after the owners were charged with doing about 200 km/h  in a 60 km/h zone. Police claim that the Ferrari narrowly missed a mother walking with her children.

When caught, the drivers were given a 15 day license suspension and their cars were impounded.

BMW being seized in BC

BMW being seized in BC

Under B.C.’s “strengthened civil forfeiture law”  the courts can seize the cars  on the grounds that the vehicles were street racing and the drivers showed “disregard for the safety of others on the road”;  and there “was potential for catastrophic injury or death.”

RCMP Supt. Tonia Enger, vice-president of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police believes that they drivers received a just decision. ”Had one of these vehicles lost control, there would have been a fatality or fatalities, without question.”

The BMW will be sold at a government auction while a local dealership has agreed to buy the Ferrari for $235,000.

That being said, the drivers are not being left penniless. Fifty per cent of the proceeds of the Ferrari sale will go to a relative of the driver who was part owner of the vehicle but not involved in the incident. The driver will get 30 per cent, and the province will take the remaining 20 per cent.

In the case of the BMW, storage fees and repaying a bank debt will be paid first then seventy percent will go to the driver, with another 30 per cent going to the province.

I must come clean.  While the logical part of me sees the many virtues and uses of minivans, I silently promised my cooler, fun loving part that I shall never own one.  I figured that whenever I would be blessed with off-spring I would purchase a SUV.

You fancy huh!!!

Toyota has come out with a fun-loving campaign that has made me smile. This minivan maker has decided to get its swagger on. Well go on Toyota, you do you! You make it look almost cool.

Honda’s latest and cheapest hybrid was announced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The Honda Jazz is known as the Honda Fit in North America. The new hybrid is priced at 1.5 million yen or approximately $19,310 (US), making it one of the cheapest hybrids on the market. The non-hybrid fit currently gets great mileage with 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.  We can only imagine how far the hybrid will go on a gallon.

The Jazz Hybrid will go on sale in some European markets in the early part of 2011 however it may never see the light of day in North America. “We haven’t decided on a U.S. launch,” said Honda Executive Vice President, Koichi Kondo, “As for the future, it’s open to question. We will carefully be watching the market situation.”

It seems that Honda Executives don’t believe that North Americans will be willing to pay an additional $3, 500 for a hybrid when the are getting great mileage on the regular Fit.

So I guess the question remains would you purchase the proverbial cow if you are getting the milk cheaply?

Happy Days are here again!

I am happy to announce that the worst of global recession is over! Now you are probably wondering how I can claim to such a conclusion? No, Paul the Oracle Octopus did not tell me. But each day I am greeted by emails from luxury car makers stating that sales are heading through the roof.

Rolls rolling up sales

Rolls rolling up sales

One such company is Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The uber luxury automaker is selling cars at record levels. Purchases in June quadrupled worldwide and in the first 2 quarters of 2010 sales were up by almost 200%, compared with the same periods in 2009.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, “This is an excellent interim result and we are well on our way to meeting our target of at least doubling our 2009 sales result.”

Now for those of you with an extra half a million dollars to drop on a new ride, you should hurry to your nearest Rolls dealership because it is reported that some models have a waiting list until at least October.

And that’s the latest in the K-lane.

Damsels of Design’

Here is an interesting article by Stuart Schwartzapfel about women automotive designers.

While I do not agree one hundred percent with some of the over simplified reasons given to explain why women have not headed into the vehicle design biz, I quite enjoyed the video and retro research that went into the piece.

 Kay

—————————————————————————————————

Automotive ‘Damsels of Design’ Moving to Driver’s Seat

By Stuart Schwartzapfel

Harley Earl was the first automotive designer to hire women. But it wasn’t necessarily equality Earl sought back in 1950. If that were the case, General Motors probably wouldn’t have called them the “Damsels of Design.”

No, the legendary designer hired women because he felt they possessed unique insight and excellent attention to detail, talents he found immensely useful for designing interiors, suggesting colors and selecting fabrics.

All these years later, automotive design remains dominated by men, and the top ranks are still held by the likes of Walter de’Silva and J. Mays. But women are playing an increasingly important role even as the industry struggles to attract more young designers like Kimberly Wu at Honda, Kerrin Liang of Hyundai, Michelle Christensen at Acura and Christine Park of Cadillac.

GM recently honored the women of automotive design at the Museum of the City of New York, where Park and others discussed the role of women in auto design and why we don’t see more of them in studios. It’s a question design schools and automakers are asking with mounting urgency.

“This issue about why there are so few women is an omnipresent matter,” said Imre Molnar, dean of the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. “The industry is changing slowly but significantly.”

It is an uphill fight for one simple reason, Molnar and others say. Far fewer women than men are into cars, so designing them holds less appeal. There is some validity to that. Of the 15 to 18 people who graduate from the center’s transportation-design program each year, only two or three are women. It’s the same at Art Center for Design in Pasadena, California, where one in 10 graduates is a woman.

Part of the problem is women too often believe they must be gearheads who live and breathe performance if they want to design cars.

General Motors designer Christine Park stands with the Chevrolet Orlando. Photo: General Motors

General Motors designer Christine Park stands with the Chevrolet Orlando. Photo: General Motors

“Not many women know what’s involved,” said Park, whose work for GM includes the Chevrolet Orlando and the interior of the Cadillac XTS Platinum concept car. “It’s not all about mechanical things. The misconception that you have to know the gearhead stuff to design a car is the reason why many women tend not to go into car design.”

Those who do enter the field find work readily, as automakers tend to employ women at a higher rate than they graduate from the major design schools. Women make up about 30 percent of the global design staff for BMW, for instance, and 20 percent at GM. As vehicle design becomes more sophisticated, automakers are eager to bring more women into studios, because they often bring different influences and perspectives to the table. Park, for example, cites fashion designer Coco Chanel as a great influence.

“Her philosophy that luxury is not about vulgarity is something I take to heart when I design luxury vehicles,” Park said. “I think simplicity speaks to elegance.”

Simple economics is also driving the change, said Stewart Reed, transportation design chair at Art Center for Design. Women are an increasingly important market demographic, he said, and automakers must reflect, and cater to, their wants and needs.

“When you think about sensibilities for car design, most of the car-buying decisions have women serving a very important role,” he said. “This should be represented in the design studio.”

Until recently, women largely were relegated to the same jobs as GM’s damsels — selecting colors, choosing fabrics and designing interiors. Important tasks to be sure, but a tough way to make your name in a field where the pinnacle is designing exterior bodywork.

“It’s still a boys’ club,” Molnar said of the top tiers of auto design. “But I don’t want to overstate that, because it is changing.”

Indeed:

  • Volvo took a page from Earl’s playbook when it commissioned a team of women to design the YCC (Your Concept Car), a concept created specifically for women.
  • The interior of the BMW Z4 was designed by Nadya Arnaout and the exterior by Juliane Blasi (top photo).
  • Park’s design for the Cadillac Converj concept was runner-up to the design ultimately seen at the Detroit auto show in 2009.
  • Acura hired Michelle Christensen, its first female exterior designer, in 2005. She designed the sleek 2010 Acura ZDX crossover.

In the end, giving women high-profile jobs like that — and the leeway to do them well — is what will draw more of them into the business.

“Arguably the best way to do it is to create a culture internally where women can do very well and thrive and prosper,” Molnar said. “That way it would feed on itself, and more women would be attracted to it.”

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling approximately 700,000 Jeep sport-utility vehicles and Dodge and Chrysler minivans worldwide for brake line and wiring defects.

The automaker is recalling Jeep Wranglers from the 2006 through 2010 model years due to a potential brake fluid leak. On the Jeeps, the front inner fender liners can rub against the brake fluid tubes and cause a leak. The leak could then result in partial loss of brakes.

Chrysler is also recalling Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans from the 2008 and 2009 model years because a wiring problem which could potentially cause a fire inside the sliding doors. The minivans can have improperly placed wires that can come in contact with sliding door hinges, and the hinges can wear through the insulation and in rare cases cause a fire inside the door.

The automakers said in a statement that neither recall has caused any accidents or injuries as of yet.

The company says it will inspect all potentially affected vehicles and repair or replace damaged parts if necessary. There will be no cost to the vehicle owner

This recall comes after one last week for about 25,000 Dodge Calibers and 71 Jeep Compass sports utility vehicles because of sticky gas pedals – the same problem that caused Toyota to recall 2.3 million vehicles in January.

Stay tuned for more info. Bentley's newest creation.

The good folks over at Bentley said today that they will be unveiling their new Supercar on March 3rd. They are not saying much, but they claim it will be their fastest and most powerful production car ever. It will also be “Green-ish” and will run of FlexFuel Technology.

So what this means is it would beat their 200 mph Bentley Continental GT. Yea!

My loyal tree huggers will also be happy to know that Bentley plans to have its whole lineup operating on FlexFuel by 2012. So while this will probably not be the most environmentally friendly car in the world, it definitely makes my “Green-ish” list.

Hopefully I will have more to share before the third. I will let you know the moment I do.

For the first time in decades Toyota Motor Corp. has outsold General Motors Corp. to become the world’s biggest automaker. Toyota outsold GM in 2008.

There was another first for Toyota. The automaker reported company’s first full-year operating loss in more than 50 years.

That being said both automakers reported lower sales last year.  Toyota inched in to first place by selling 8.97 cars and trucks approximately 620 000 more unites than GM.

Hopefully this car will come to be.

GM's Volt

First of all, we have a very cash strapped General Motors. Will a government bailout come in the nick of time?

Secondly, the Volt a plug-in hybrid has used big chunk of the company’s product development budget. A huge R&D cost is not that bad if the vehicle would drive in huge sales however by GM’s own admission, the Volt won’t make money. The level that they will be able to price it will not support the cost needed to build it. This green car will need government incentives to help it sell.

Thirdly, there is the battery challenge. The rush is on to develop an affordable and safe lithium-ion battery.

That being said I think the Volt is kind of cool.

Take a look for yourself.

I must admit that I am somewhat “cellular-ly” challenged. I get a cell phone, learn its features and use the phone. I will continue to use the phone until one of the following two things happen; I break the phone or my brother gets embarrassed that I am still using the outdated model and switches it.

So when some of my friends took the day off and lined up for iPhones, I must admit that I did not quite get the hype. (Kind of like the New Kids on the Block’s comeback tour, however I digress.)

Wouldn't Soon to be Middle Aged Men on the Street or STBMAMOTS be a more appropriate name?

Wouldn't Soon to be Middle Aged Men on the Street or STBMAMOTS be a more appropriate name?

When not writing about cars, I work in a financial news station. Chatter about the new iPhone was everywhere, I wonder if Jesus will get such press when he comes back. Once again I digress.

If you don’t want to join them the least one could do is understand them. So I decided to see what cool applications the iPhone has for the automotive world.

GPS Mapping

Now instead of calling someone and asking for directions or “Mapquest-ing” on your phone; the new iPhone comes with GPS enabled mapping. The cell can tell you where you are, where to go (Yellow pages) and how to get there. You can plot travel times, routes, and where to full up. Now before you throw you car nav system out of the window, the phone has one draw back, no voice controls. So it can not be used while driving unless you have a co-pilot in the passenger’s seat.

G-Park

For all of you forget people who misplace things like you car, G-Park allows you to bookmark where you left your vehicle. No more roaming around aimlessly like a Seinfeld episode. And for all of you early adopters who ran out last year and paid three times as much for the old iPhone as this years model, don’t despair. While your phone doesn’t have GPS like this years model it will still work due to cell tower triangulation and WiFi. So while your phone is sooooo ten minutes ago, you will still be able to find your car.

So cheers to all of you who managed to get your new toy despite line ups and servers crashes. I would do the same for one week in a Pagani Zonda.

One week is all I ask...

One week is all I ask...

A few years ago, if you told anyone that General Motors would have a SUV or CUV that would compete against Lexus, you would have been laughed at or place in a mental institution. Fast forward to 2008 and Buick is winning award after award for its Enclave.

2008 Buick Enclave with 20-inch Wheel

The Enclave is a full size luxury crossover that seats seven to eight people. Built on the same platform as the Saturn Outlook and the GMC Acadia, it is a massive yet stylish people mover.

On the road, the CUV surprised me with its stability and handling. I was expecting “floaty”, “land-yacht” like ride but the suspension was bang on. It stuck well in the corners considering its size, and the electronic stability system was more than adequate. Uneven, pothole riddled roads were barely noticeable.

Second-row and optional center console.

This Buick is powered by 3.6-litre DOHC V6 VVT engine that produces 275 horses and 251 pounds of torque. While that is nothing to sneeze at, this vehicle weighs almost 2 tons (2 172 kilograms) so for a lead foot like myself it was just a tad sluggish. However, compared to most vehicles its size the acceleration was quite sufficient. Transmission wise, the dual-overhead camshaft engine with 6-speed overdrive is extremely smooth.

With a fuel economy rating of 13.0 L/100 km (city) and 8.3 L/100 km (highway) for FWD models and 13.5 L/100 km (city) and 8.9 L/100 km (highway) for AWD models, this is one of the best ratings for any SUV you would find on the roads today.

The first thing my passengers noticed while being chauffeured was the complete lack of exterior or engine sound. In true luxury fashion, this large CUV is well built and insulated so that the sound system competes with nothing. (Unless you have passengers who like to sing along off key, like I did.)

Dashboard

Two posts ago, I featured an interview with Michael Burton, the man in charge of designing the interior of this vehicle. He claimed that when designing this vehicle a lot of time, money and effort was spent on creating a luxury feel. Now when talking about vehicle interiors, the words “luxury” and “North American” rarely reside in the same sentence. Well, when describing the Enclave’s interior and styling overall, the phrase “You have come a long way baby!” sums it up. I must admit that I am too young to remember Buick’s heydays but this is definitely a step in the right direction. Lots of chrome and wood tastefully clad the dashboard and gaps fit well.

2008 Buick Enclave - sliding center console.

Overall this stylish vehicle was an absolute pleasure to drive. It comes in two models the CX which starts at $40 895 and the CXL which starts at $48 295 (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price).

Cartoons from all over…

By Kay Layne

Part One: Learning about the “Man” who is trying to bring back the brand.

Michael Burton and moi

I had the good fortune of chatting with Michael Burton, a Director at General Motors and the man in charge of designing the interior of the Buick Enclave. He is the first black to design for each of the American big three (Ford, Chrysler and General Motors).

Burton grew up just down highway 401 in Lansing, Michigan. The Designer-turned-Director says he lived so close to the GM plant that as a kid, he used to go watch the new vehicles being moved to a nearby parking lot. “Since I was a young child” says Burton, “I had the ambition, the drive and the passion to become an automotive designer.”

At the age of twelve or thirteen, Burton penned a letter including some of his sketches to a human resources representative at General Motors. They got back to him with advice on how to become a designer, which he claims he followed closely. Son of a single mother, who did not know much about becoming a car designer but she made sure he had a mentor who did. He has had several mentors through the years, dating back to his early teens.

Burton has the following advice for anyone thinking about entering the demanding field of automotive design, “There will always be challenges. Now life can either be a stumbling block or a stepping-stone, it depends on your perspective. Appropriate a tenacious spirit and never let anyone stop you.”

His inspiration for the Enclave came from looking back to Buick’s heydays of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. He remembers as a child, his uncles driving in from Chicago in the old Deuce and a Quarters (Electra 225) and Wildcats of the 60’s. “They had a certain, swagger and elegance that stuck in a deep crevice of my mind” Burton recalls. He admits that as of late the Buick brand had become somewhat lethargic and geriatric.

The designer says he worked with a young team, so before they even picked up a pen, they took a look back at vintage Buicks and then moved forward. A concept he calls “heritage forward.” The team also studied the interiors of Rolls Royce, Bentley and private jets. “I was very disenchanted that Europeans and Asians were beating us at our own game” says Burton. “A lot of the Asian designers came to America, be it at General Motors or Ford and learnt. Then went back and beat us at our own game.” He claims that he wants anyone driving the Enclave to have the fit and the feel as if they were driving an European car but with a historical American flair.

I realize that the last thing most people in the northern parts of North America want to think about is snow. Not too long ago, record amounts of snow fell from the sky causing treacherous road conditions. Most states and provinces frown upon studded or chained tires due to the damage they do roads once the snow or ice is cleared.

Well good news, spring has sprung and soon so might your tires.

q-tires.jpg

A company called Q Tires created a tire called Q Celsius with retractable studs. So with a flip of a switch a driver could change from all season tires to studs. And vice-versa once the snow clears.

How it works is that air pressure from a main chamber expands to secondary chamber, which lifts the studs above the surface of the treads. To retract, the air pressure is released and the studs sink below the treads. While the company does admit some pressure is lost during retraction, they claim the system can be activated 20 to 30 times before you need to add air.

They can be installed, balanced and plugged like regular tires. These James Bond like wheels use a wireless signal to activate and deactivate the studs.

A flip of a switch sure beats having to change from summer or snow tires, and then back again each year.

The company hopes to have them on roads later this year. The cost has not yet been revealed.

To conclude my series on “greenish’’ vehicles, I shall actually profile a real “green” vehicle.

Canada is a great land with great exports. There is the big stuff like forestry and oil. Then there is bigger stuff like comedians, Mike Meyers, Jim Carrey and Russell Peters, to name a few.

Well move over Celine, there is something else that is placing the Great White North on the map. Canada is becoming known for its Canadian cars. I am not talking about the ones built in Windsor or Oshawa. I am talking about the ones made in the land of “poutine”. I am talking about a Canuck carmaker, Zenn Motor Company

windmill.jpg

Zenn stands for zero emissions, no noise and are the makers of luxury NEV-neighborhood electric vehicles.Zenn Motors is headquartered in Ontario, the cars are manufactured in Quebec. These zippy electric Canadian cars are made in Canada just cannot be driven in Canada.

factory_005.jpg

Yes, you read that right. You see even though they have met all the requirements set forth by Transport Canada and have received the National Safety Mark, they still have to be approved by each province. Only British Columbia has low speed regulations in place. However, if you wish to purchase and/or drive one of these cars then all you have to do as a Canadian is head south. Zenn cars are legal in 45 of the 50 States.

.plug.jpg

The Zenn will take you 60 kilometres per charge and plugs into a standard 120 volt outlet. That works out to just two cents per kilometer.

The car is cute and cheap however it is a low speed vehicle and tops out at around 60kph. It was made to zip around urban cores, not the open road. It produces no emissions and next to no noise. I have driven hybrids, and I must admit that the no noise feature is quite cool.

sunroof_inside_open.jpg

Unlike other NEVs that look like glorified golfcarts, the Zenn is boxy two seater compact car. It comes equipped with electric windows, a stereo in the dash, a huge sunroof, aluminum wheels and room for groceries in the back.

So there you have it a “green” car to end my “greenish” series. Have a wonderful “green” St. Patrick’s Day.

Go big, go “greenish”

by Kay Layne

This one is for all of you who sent emails about my “Greenish” Lambo article.

I think the whole “Greenish” concept would make a really cool movement. Yes, for all of you who aren’t ready to completely go “green”… come join us on the “Greenish” side of the fence.

To my darling Trevor who left a message asking what’s next, an environmentally friendly Hummer or a hybrid Escalade? What a brilliant idea.

Let us start with the Hummer.

hummer.jpg

Back in 2004, General Motors created a hydrogen powered Hummer H2. It is currently driven around town by the “Terminator turned Governor” Arnold Schwarzenegger.

arnold-hummer.jpg

The H2H works off of a hydrogen powered supercharged version of its regular 6.0-liter V-8 engine, but this hydrogen vehicle’s only emission is water vapors.

Now to be honest Arnie can’t go too far. He can only cruise around Cali with its Hydrogen Highway Network.

As for the hybrid Escalade – it is coming to a dealership near you. (I shall call you, Trevor when I test drive it.)

full-size.jpg

The luxury “Grenish” SUV is powered by a 2-Mode hybrid system and promises 45% improvement in fuel economy when darting around the city. On the highways expect to see a savings of 20%.

full1.jpg

This monster hybrid comes in both two or four wheel drive. Towing wise the two wheel drive can haul 6000lbs and 5700lbs in four wheel drive. (This is important to all you soccer moms and rappers who need a truck this size.)

I was unable to find out the pricing at this time but stay tuned and I will update you. (I know you are chomping at the bit for this one, Trev.)

gallardo_295739a.jpg

By Kay Layne

For all of you tree-huggers out there, here is a vehicle for you. Lamborghini has introduced a more environmental friendly version of the very popular Gallardo. The LP560-4 weighs in 44lbs lighter than the previous version and this new Gallardo has cut emissions by 18%.

lamborghini-gallard_295950a.jpg

It may be greener but it is not a slouch, this baby can get from zero to 60 mph (96 kilometers per hour, where I am from) in a mere 3.7 seconds. In less time than it took you to read that last sentence it hit sixty (or almost a hundred). That is three-tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. It has a mere 552 horses under the hood a paltry 40 more than its older brother. Powered by a direct-injection 5.2 liter V10 with permanent four-wheel drive and has a top speed of 202 mph.

lambolp5602500.jpg

The front has been redone with larger air intakes to provide cooling. I bet you are wondering when you can purchase one as a gift to me… You are in luck they go on sale in Europe in June for a mere $220 000.00.

lambolp5603500.jpg

Now back to the whole green factor most “Lambos” are only driven 5 000 kilometers per year on average, couple this with “better” emissions and you will find that they are barely eating a hole in the ozone. Move over Kermit it looks like it is getting easier to be greenish.

Boyd Coddington, legendary designer and builder of hod-rods died this morning. The cause of death is undisclosed. Coddington was 63.

hot-rod.jpg

Coddington was also a television celebrity with his own reality based show “American Hot Rod”. The West Coast legend was actually raised in Idaho. He started building cars in his early teens.

images.jpg

Many in the music world would have been introduced to his work via ZZ top for whom he did several projects. He is credited by some as the creator of the “Billet Revolution” because of his metal machining techniques.  His creativity and workmanship will be surely missed.

Today actually started out white and snowy for me and many other parts of North America. However, things are beginning to look a little green.

First of all in Shanghai, General Motors Corp introduced its first China-made hybrid.  2008 Buick LaCrosse

The Buick Lacrosse Eco-Hybrid is part of GM’s joint venture with Shangai Automotive industry Corp.

In a statement released by the automaker, the hybrid has a fuel economy of 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers while its non-hybrid brother takes 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers. Is it me but I am just not that impressed.

I guess GM hopes life gets easier being green. “Addressing the environmental protection and energy security issues is essential for ensuring the automotive industry’s long-term sustainable development,” said Shanghai GM President Ding Lei.

No word yet as to price or when it will be available here.

General Motors will have eight different hybrid models for sale in the States by the end of this year. In a statement released earlier this month, Chief Executive Rick Wagoner vows to up the number to 16 models with the next four years.

Meanwhile over in DC, Ford showed off its 2009 redesigned Escape hybrid and 2009 Mercury Mariner hybrid.

Escape hybrid-AP

The Washington Auto show unveiled the two hybrids and the automaker says you can expect improvements in performance and power. Both will be available with a new 2.5 liter engine that will increase power by over a tenth to 170 horses. I shall wait and see.

They will be on sale later is summer.

Cadillac DTS

Posted: October 8, 2007 in Uncategorized

caddilac.jpg

by K-lane – Please allow me to be brutally honest. I was not exactly looking forward to testing this car. Do not get me wrong, I’m an automotive journalist; this is what I do and enjoy, I test cars. That being said I was not really in the mood to test yet another “boat”. I’m so not Cadillac’s demographic; a single female with retirement still many, many moons away. Well, that feeling disappeared within moments of getting behind the wheel of Cadillac’s new DTS. By the time I hit the highway I was having an all out blast in a car that, only a decade or so ago was as sleepy as its DeVille nameplate.

It only took 57 years, incidentally, with 2006 being the year that Cadillac reworked and renamed its flagship Deville sedan; now quite simply titled DTS after the three-letter acronym used for the old DeVille’s sportiest version. The newly named Caddy boasts a great new look and solid feel. Now more integrated within the new Cadillac family, the DTS sports vertical head and tail lamps and a wide new grille featuring the wreathed crest emblem in the middle. Its clean lines give it a touch of European flair, although the overall look is still definitely American. Its most American attribute might just be its overall mass; the big caddy definitely falling into my “land yacht” category. At 526 cm (207 inches) in length, it is ten centimeters (four inches) longer than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class and twenty-three centimeters (nine inches) longer than a BMW 7 series. That being said, the DTS is well proportioned. With the DTS, mind you, it carries itself elegantly, not bulky. Just like how I like my men; it’s big, handsome, stylish, yet nimble.

The DTS comes in four different packages; 1SB, 1SC, 1SD and Performance (Luxury I, II, III, and Performance-Stateside). Standard in all models are such features as remote start, Xenon high intensity headlamps, Tri-zone climate control, an M/FM/MP3/satellite-ready 8-speaker audio system with seek-scan functionality, plus an in-dash mounted single CD player, OnStar, full range traction control, heated exterior power mirrors with indicators, leather seating, six airbags, dual stage and depth sensitive up front, plus side curtains for all outboard occupants.

The ISC package ($55,720 MSRP) throws XM radio, heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, driver side auto dimming outside mirror, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, Ultrasonic front and rear parking assist, and heated windshield washer fluid into the mix.

The ISD package ($61,360 MRSP) upgrades the car with the following options: power tilt & telescopic steering column, Intellibeam headlamps, a Bose 8-speaker audio system, massaging power lumbar, rear seat height adjustable head restraints, 4-way power rear lumbar seat adjusters, real walnut burl wood trim, RainSense moisture sensitive automatic wipers, a powered rear window sunshade, power folding outside mirrors, and heated leather steering wheel with wood accents.

I tested the Performance package ($63,835 MSRP) which added such goodies as 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels and a sports suspension (Magnetic Ride Control) – more on this in a minute.

The DTS has an all new interior, with supple leather and genuine burled walnut featured in the model I tested. It’s the little touches that make the DTS so stylish and luxurious, such as the analogue clock, easy to read gauges, quality materials and tight seams. The feel is rich, but not over done. The controls are extremely easy to use, and interior spacious for those tall in height and wide in girth.

Just like the saying, “Youth is wasted on the young”; the old shouldn’t

be the only drivers enjoying the DTS. While it will get retirees comfortably to the golf course, this car is so much more. I picked up two of my girlfriends, a twenty-something year old named Taiwo and thirty-something Paula Ann. Both loved the car, each for different reasons. Taiwo was all about the styling and comfort. She loved the big leather, heated and cooled seats with power massaging lumbar, not to mention the KICKING sound system. My tester came equipped with the Bose premium sound package, which features eight speakers, an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, an auxiliary jack (for those of us who need an MP3 player with us at all times) add to that XM radio and we were in heaven. The sound was crisp and the bass solid. This was one of the best factory installed systems I have ever heard. With Tai it was all about cruising and finding yourself on roads were you could drive real slow.

Paula Ann was a totally different story, she was all about all aspects of performance. First, she loved how quiet and composed the ride was. Like other luxury vehicles, the DTS’ cabin is deadly still, with wind and engine noise kept to a minimum. Ms. Paula is always on the go and likes a car that can keep up. For her it is like that old saying; “It isn’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of fight in the dog.” So we took the car out to highway and opened it up. Like the accelerator pedal, she was floored at how responsive and ultimately how fast it was, plus how well it handled. So much so she is now thinking of buying one.

Like its predecessor, the Deville, the DTS is a front-wheel drive car, with a 4.6L Northstar V8 engine under the hood. This being said, the sophisticated V8 comes in two configurations: the two base luxury models come equipped with a 275-hp version that allows for low rpm (i.e. smooth) power. This allows you to accelerate quickly yet quietly. The Luxury III and Performance model I tested sports a high-output 291-hp Northstar and has a sportier exhaust note exiting the twin pipes. While sporty, mind you, the sound is still subtle and rich. You expect such noises to be emanating from a Corvette, not this Caddy sedan. Very well done.

But what’s this four-speed automatic transmission? I realize some of you are probably balking at the thought of a 4-speed in a car in this price range, when 5-, 6-, 7 and even 8-speed transmissions are becoming more of the norm. Truth be told, the Caddy’s 4-speed was more than adequate. I venture to guess that you’d barely notice the difference, at least if you’re are conservative driver with a lighter right foot than moi (which is most DTS drivers).

On the highway, the DTS is so smooth and quiet that I rarely felt the speed I was are traveling. With this car, the adaptive cruise control isn’t just a nice little option but a necessity. I’m usually very good at gauging the speed that I am hurling down the highway at, but even I was fooled the first day I picked my test DTS up. Heading down Highway 401 from Oshawa back to Toronto, I was cruising merrily along when I happened to glance down at the speedometer… YIKES! While I tend to drive a touch faster than most, I would not have been able pay the court cost and speeding ticket that I might have received that day on my lowly journalist salary.

Most in the DTS’ demographic could afford to pay such a ticket, however, and many of these are looking for such a large, smooth riding, luxury car. It is also good for those who hate “floaty” rides, despise nosedive during aggressive braking, are disgusted by sluggish steering, and are repulsed by lethargic acceleration. The DTS may be big, but it isn’t unresponsive. I love the way it handles. My fellow Toronto writers, Justin and Jon were quick to point out that its good manners are partly due to its Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Equipped with magneto-rheological fluid in its shock absorbers, the MRC suspension adjusts to road and driving conditions up to 1,000 times per second, thus creating less body roll and better handling than most expect from a car this size.

Even parking was not an issue. I took the DTS to a crowded street festival one Friday night – Taste of Little Italy. With the World Cup on, College Street was the place to be. Someone had suggested that I drive a smaller car because parking would be tight; no need. The moment you place the car in reverse the passenger exterior mirror automatically adjusts to give you a better view of the curb below. As well, its ultrasonic parking assist system can be easily seen in your rearview mirror. In one fell swoop my big car was parked in an extremely tight space.

During my week-long test, my experience with the DTS was

extremely pleasurable. The only downside was fuel consumption, in the city expect 13.8 L/100 km (20 miles per gallon), while on the highway it averages 8.7 L/100 km (32 miles per gallon). For its reasonable price range, this car definitely delivers, but will consumers get over the old-folks stigma attached to this car? I doubt it. But who knows? Maybe a young rapper will buy one and by doing so elevate it on the cool meter, it worked for Escalade. What I do know, however, is that it was with great reluctance that I gave the keys back to GM at the end of my test week. If I could only rap.

2007 Lexus RX 350 Road Test

Posted: September 29, 2007 in Uncategorized

rx350_6.jpg

By K-lane -North America’s number one selling luxury SUV, the RX 330, is being reworked for 2007, and is now renamed RX 350. Compared to its previous revolutionary update, that saw its alphanumeric designation move up from RX 300 to RX 330 to coincide with a complete makeover from tires to roof rack in model year 2004, visually noticeable modifications are minor, however, the changes made under its shapely exterior panels are significant.

One of the biggest changes effects the engine. Now sitting under the hood for 2007 is a new 3.5-litre V6. The new all-aluminum engine has dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-I), which allows for greater torque over a wider powerband. The RX 350 produces 270 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 251 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm, up 47 horses and 13 lb-ft from the 2006 RX 330. The SUV’s ability to accelerate is a respectable as some V8s. For example, the new RX can zip from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Now let us take a look a couple luxury V8s. BMW’s X5 4.4 manages the same feat in 7.2 seconds, only 0.2 seconds quicker, and Mercedes-Benz’s ML500 is even a touch slower getting from standstill to 100 km/h, needing 7.5 seconds.

The sensible person in me loves the more power, less gas philosophy. The five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission combines for great fuel efficiency, with city driving at 12.4 L/100 km and highway at 9.0 L/100 km. And for those concerned about ozone levels, the quicker 2007 RX produces about the same amount of emissions as its predecessor, giving it Ultra Low Vehicle 2 (ULV2) status.

All-wheel drive remains standard, but changes have been made to the AWD system with the addition of an integrated transfer case and viscous coupling controlled, limited slip centre differential. What this means in English is that normally the torque would be split half and half between the front and rear axles, however, should the front or rear wheels encounter a slippery patch of road, the limited slip differential will direct the power to the axle with the most traction.

One of the first things I noticed when driving this luxury SUV is how smooth and quiet the ride is. Now don’t get me wrong, the original RX was never jarring or loud, however, the engineers at Lexus took the 2007 a few steps further up the desirability ladder. On top of such design features like a rigid body structure and vibration canceling engine mounts, they have now made it even quieter with the addition of an acoustic glass windshield and sound insulation in the floor mats, door and instrument panels. Bye-bye wind noise and droning tire sounds.

The interior has all the fancy trimmings expected; beautiful leather and wood trim with heated power front seats and two driver seat memory settings, plus a power tilt/telescopic steering wheel. A sliding centre console hid all my odds and ends cleverly. All my passengers were kept at the perfect temperature thanks to dual zone, automatic climate control with rear seat heater ducts. Other spoils included rain-sensing wipers, headlamp washers, an integrated Homelink garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and auto-dimming and heated exterior mirrors.

The 40/20/40 split back seats fold down to provide 2,398 litres (84.7 cubic feet) of cargo area. The model I drove was equipped with the Ultra Premium Package which included upgrades like a very smart looking and convenient illuminated entry system, a wood and leather wrapped steering wheel, a wooden shift knob, a power rear liftgate, an auto leveling headlamp system and adaptive front lighting system that sheds light into the road’s twist and turns.

Nowhere better to listen to you favourite tunes than in the quiet interior. The premium satellite-ready 8-speaker AM/FM/CD audio player with an in-dash 6-CD changer comes standard. This system also includes MP3/WMA compatibility, digital signal processing and is easy to use without looking thanks to controls integrated into the steering wheel spokes. Once again the model I drove was fully loaded, and therefore came with the upgraded Mark Levinson Premium Audio 11 speaker System – awesome sound. The rear seat DVD system also received an upgrade increasing the screen from seven inches to nine and included a remote control, rear audio controls and two sets of wireless headphones. If your rear passengers do not possess the same exquisite entertainment taste as you don’t fret, the back seat passengers can listen to a different audio source than you by using their headphones.

Ultra premium models come with a spookingly accurate Lexus Navigation System. The system was very easy to use by either touching its display screen or via voice commands. The voice control component can be used in English, French or Spanish, however, it can guide you vocally in ten different languages. I put the system to the test frequently and it came through with flying colours. The navigation display screen has been improved as well with improved clarity and contrast. The system also comes with a very handy back-up camera, which appears instantly once you place the transmission in reverse. It made visibility very clear, but remember that objects viewed are closer than they appear. Also incorporated into the system is Bluetooth handsfree technology, which allows you to take or make calls via your Bluetooth equipped cellular phone by linking it to the RX’s system and then using the touch screen to place or receive calls. Even easier, you can make call with the steering wheel controls too. The system can also download and store all the contact numbers in your phone.

Standard on the RX 350 is a new tire pressure monitoring system. A sensor is placed on each wheel and warns you via a warning light when the pressure gets too low. Other safety features include various multi-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger, and roll-sensing front and rear head/side curtain airbags for all occupants.

Over all, the RX 350′s ride is smooth and cushy like a luxury

sedan, handling quite acceptable and cabin loaded with a lot of great features. What I like most about the upgraded RX is what I like about the outgoing model; it has wonderful styling. Top that up with an outstanding warranty covering the whole vehicle for 48 months or 80,000 kms, while the powertrain components are covered for 72 months or 110,000 kms, and it’s no wonder why Lexus sells so many. The competition may be heating up, but the refreshed RX 350 is up to the task of maintaining its sales leadership.
